Gene Sarno is a Jersey boy who migrated to the Frederick, Maryland area with his wife Laura and two daughters Lindsay and Hailey in 1993. After earning a B.S. Degree in Business Management and Marketing from Fairleigh Dickinson University in Rutherford, N.J., his interests gravitated toward the field of horticulture. As a result, Sarno Landscaping was born in 1980. It remains a viable business to the present day. Musically, Gene has been playing guitar since the age of ten, mostly self taught, as a direct result of the influence of the Kingston Trio. Not totally comfortable with the folk scene, he joined three other high school musician friends in forming THE STOKERS, a Beach Boy/Surfer-rock band who turned out to be the darlings of the high school dance and party set. From there, he felt the overwhelming influences of groups and artists such as Crosby, Stills & Nash, the Eagles, the Allman Brothers, James Taylor, Boss Springsteen, Eric Clapton, John Stewart, and Lindsey Buckingham, to name a few. He also credits himself with a fair number of original compositions, mostly based on his numerous travel experiences. He has worked as a soloist, as a member of a duo, trio, and as a band member, both acoustically and electrically, for many years.

Steve Hess is a life-long Maryland resident and lives in the Yellow Springs area of Frederick, MD with his two youngest boys and his lovely wife and artist Ann. He spent his early years dividing his time between a traditional suburban life in Bethesda and a rural upbringing at a waterfront farm in Calvert County. A Mount Saint Mary’s and Hood College graduate, he began his continuing career in education with the Frederick County Public Schools and currently serves as Director of Research and Accountability. Steve started early in music with classical piano and voice training, and he converted to solo guitar and folk-oriented performances in the late sixties and early seventies. Father of three boys and one daughter, and grandfather of three, his musical interests range from Beethoven to the blues, classic rock to country, Doo Wop to Dylan, and from Gospel to the Grand Ole Opry. Steve has a quick ear for finding vocal harmonies, and plays multiple instruments, including guitar and octave mandolin. He shares with Gene a love for performing music and entertaining a wide range of audiences. Gene and Steve both agree that singing, entertaining, watching the audience enjoy themselves, and sharing the love of music are the creative juices that inspire a most rewarding Sarno and Hess performance.
